2019 Season

Finals Day — Saturday 7th September

This year’s Colchester and District Friendly Tennis League Individual Tournaments Finals day was held at the new courts and clubhouse at Little Clacton Tennis Club in Holland Road, Little Clacton. This is the culmination of a range of singles and doubles tennis competitions aimed at players who do not regularly play in the premier or first division of the C&D tennis leagues. The event was once again well-supported and the new facilities were very much appreciated by players and their supporters alike. There were 8 finals played on the day.

The Ladies Singles was an all Spring Lane affair with many of the first set games going to deuce until at 5-1 the final game of the first set was won after 5 deuces. Ali Hysom beat Emily Skinner 6-2, 6-0. The Mens Singles was a tightly-fought match with each set going to 3-3 before James McLauchlan of West Mersea won 6-3, 6-3 against Rob Oakley of Spring Lane. James retained the title he won for the first time last year. The Ladies Doubles featured the Little Clacton pair of Louise Ungar and Kay Mansfield who seemed to enjoy the advantage of playing on their home courts to beat Hayley Everett and Kim Lane of David Lloyd 6-2, 6-0. The Veteran Mixed Doubles contained some lovely net play with excellent volley rallies, much appreciated by the spectators. However, Barabara Ager and Bob Baker of Kirby had the edge in each encounter and overcame Loess Overbury-Tapper of Spring Lane and Alex Temple of Lexden Hill 6-2, 6-0. The Mens Doubles resulted in one of the closest matches of the day, with Tim Graham and James McLauchlan of West Mersea beating Sam Taylor and Joe Lovegrove of Spring Lane 6-3, 7-5. This brought James his second trophy of the day The Veteran Ladies Doubles pitched Barbara Ager and Joy Norman against Sarah Morton and Sarah Fryer, all from Kirby. This was a close-fought battle with the lead changing hands several times in the second set. Barbara and Joy were eventually victorious 6-2, 6-4. The Veteran Mens Doubles title was retained by John Carpenter and Kevin Eastaugh of Colchester Officers’ Club who beat Andrew Simpson and Alex Temple of Lexden Hill 6-1, 6-1. The Mixed Doubles was an all Spring Lane match resulting in another close encounter. Ali Hysom and Ryan Mead recovered from losing the first set to win the match 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 against Emily Skinner and Sam Taylor.

The tournament as a whole was played in a good spirit with players often acknowledging good shots from their opponents in the spirit of the Friendly League, and was well supported by the many spectators and club members who attended the day. The winners were presented with individual plaques to keep, as well as the trophy which they keep for the year, by John Sambrook, Chairman of the League. He also presented the C&D Friendly League Team Competition winners for the 2019 season. The Ladies was won by Little Clacton, with Kirby runners up. The Mens was won by Colchester Officers Club, with Wivenhoe runners up. The Mixed was also won by Colchester Officers’ Club, with Kirby runners up.

The day was closed by John thanking the members from Little Clacton for hosting the event and providing refreshments, Sherry Hodgson for once again organising the individual competition and the volunteers who had umpired the matches.
