The Colchester and District Friendly Tennis League was established in 1960 by 10 local clubs and exists to give players of a moderate standard a chance of competitive play. Hence, it is intended specifically for older or less experienced players, or for those who simply wish to enjoy less intensive competitive tennis. There are both team and individual competitions. Players who regularly play in the Premier or First Divisions of the Colchester and District League are not eligible to play in any Friendly League event.
The first team league winners were Ardleigh club and the trophy was presented by former Colchester United footballer Reg Stewart.
The Individual Competitions were set up the following year.

At our recent AGM, Christine Clark was elected as our new Chair. This follows the sad death of our long-standing Chairman, John Sambrook, who was killed in a car accident on 27th December. The Friendly Tennis League community still feel his loss keenly as John was very close to all our hearts. For tributes see tributes to John.
