The Colchester and District Friendly Tennis League was established in 1960 by 10 local clubs and exists to give players of a moderate standard a chance of competitive play. Hence, it is intended specifically for older or less experienced players, or for those who simply wish to enjoy less intensive competitive tennis. There are both team and individual competitions. Players who regularly play in the Premier or First Divisions of the Colchester and District League are not eligible to play in any Friendly League event.

The first team league winners were Ardleigh club and the trophy was presented by former Colchester United footballer Reg Stewart. (He still lives in Colchester.)

The Individual Competitions were set up the following year. Notable winners were in the Boys Singles where the winner was Tony Hughes who is still competing, and in the Ladies Doubles where one of the winning players was Barbara Rolfe, now Barbara Little, currently a Committee Member.
